Terri Brisbin: Hooks and How to Use Them – From First to Last Word!

A writer must grab tthe reader’s attention and keep it from sentence to sentence, paragraph to paragraph, page to page and chapter to chapter. And if that reader is an editor, hooking them from beginning to end is critical. Terri reviews the elements and importance of the first page and the first chapter and how effective hooks can be used in strengthening the pacing and structure throughout your book to the last word. (For beginning and experienced writers).

When not living the glamorous life of a romance author in the southern NJ suburbs, Terri Brisbin spends her time being a married mom of three boys (now young men!) and one daughter-in-law as well as a dental hygienist of hundreds. Active in several RWA local chapters, Terri speaks at local and regional and national conferences.

A three-time RWA RITA® finalist, Terri has sold more than 1.7 million copies of her historical and paranormal romance novels, novellas and short stories in more than 20 languages in 25 countries around the world since 1998. she’s been published by Berkley/Jove, Harlequin and Kensington Books. She’s now working on more romances for release through 2013 and rereleasing her original books in digital formats.

Laura Moore on Writing A Trilogy: Some Tips, Many Cautions

Award-winning author of the Rosewood Trilogy, Laura Moore will share some lessons she learned while embarking on her first series as well as a few cautionary warnings for those contemplating whether or not to try their hand at a trilogy. In addition to exploring the pros and cons of trilogies, Laura will address other key topics to crafting a successful trilogy: plotting, world building, and managing a continually growing cast of characters. A firm believer in learning through dialogue, Laura encourages those considering a trilogy to bring their questions and ideas and those who’ve already spent time in the trilogy trenches to bring their battle stories!

Award winning Contemporary romance author Laura Moore began writing while pursuing a graduate degree in art education. Her first story filled an entire notebook before she realized that she might actually have penned a love story that others might want to read. Ride A Dark Horse, begun in a coffee-stained notebook, was published a year later.

Laura lives in Providence, RI, with her husband, two children, and their black lab. In addition to her writing, Laura also teaches English at the Rhode Island School of Design. Laura loves to hear from readers. Please visit her at: www.lauramooreboooks.com or follow her on Facebook.

Character Genealogy: Charting Family Trees over Several Generations

Karen Frisch

Workshop Description: Characters with large families are a challenge for both readers and writers, especially when generations are interrelated over a series of books. Children who appear in earlier novels can confuse readers when they return as adults in later books. Because readers remember from one story to the next, family details need to be consistent. Instead of relying on color coding or sticky notes to follow different generations, authors can keep track of family relationships using genealogical charts, some of which I’ve designed specifically for the writer. Charts follow individuals from the original founding family through successive generations. Handouts include genealogy and character charts that help identify characters easily, track generations of families through complicated relationships, and organize critical information writers need to know about family members, especially if a new character is the granddaughter of the heroine in Book One written eight years ago. Even those who are not blood relations can be included in unique charts that offer an easy, efficient way for writers to track the significance of even minor characters. Examples will be used to demonstrate how to chart families.

Karen Frisch has been fascinated by genealogy since childhood when her grandmother gave her a family photograph taken in Scotland in 1903. She has traced her family history back 30 generations to twelfth-century Wales. She is the author of two genealogy books published by Ancestry, Unlocking the Secrets in Old Photographs, now in its eighth printing, and Creating Junior Genealogists. She is also the author of three novels, the historical romance What’s in a Name with Avalon, the Regency Lady Delphinia’s Deception with ImaJinn, and the mystery Murder Most Civil for Mainly Murder Press. Her short story “Three of a Kind” won First Place in the 2007 Writer’s Digest Popular Fiction Awards’ Mystery & Crime Category. She once participated in a practical joke in a hospital in which she played a corpse, with what someone described as “the most dead-looking toes” he’d ever seen.

A year ago, Ruth Cardello was collecting rejection letters for her category romance and wondering if she should write the second book in that series or put it aside and work on a new project. Inspired by a speaker at RIRW, she self-published her romance and studied various strategies for promotion. The response was strong enough that she completed the second book in the series within a couple of months and self-published that, too. In about six months, she earned more from her book sales than she did from her full-time job.

In March, Ruth will break down how she chose which venues to sell her books through, how she promotes her books, and what new strategies people are experimenting with in the self-publishing world. This is a practical, how-to session. She has invited Annette Blair to join her for this workshop since, at her urging, Annette has recently self-published some of her backlist and also found the experience financially rewarding.
